Type Locality and Naming

Markam (Tibet-Sichuan border). The Zonggu Formation was erected by Zhao Jinxi in 1979. The section for the designation is at the Zonggu Village of Donggou of Markam, Xizang (unpublished). It was the upper formation of the Xiangdui Gr (but see that Group entry).


Lithology and Thickness

The Zonggu Formation is mainly represented by brown red conglomerate interbedded with sandstone, with variegated mudstone. It is 452.5 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation marked by purple red and dark purple conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone is distinguished from the Laoran Fm marked by dark purple and gray green mudstone with purple sandstone. The Zonggu Formation is in disconformable contact with the underlying Laoran Fm.

Upper contact

The top marked by yellow green and gray brown sandstone interbedded with purple red siltstone and mudstone is distinguished from the Paleogene Gongjue Gr. The Zonggu Formation is in unconformable contact with the Paleogene.

Regional extent

The present formation is distributed in the Markam, Chag’yab and Riwoqe counties of Xizang.

Fossils

The formation yields Hadrosauridae of unknown genera, Ornthischia-like Ornithomimus sp. of unknown species and Saurischian Megacervixosaurus tibensis, etc.
